‘Calm Before Calving’ was inspired by a moment in Glacier Bay, Alaska when the sea was calm and the air was cold and the boat was coming around to the viewing area of the Margerie Glacier. The sun was shining on the glacier which may have spurred on the calving that came later. I attempted here to capture a kind of tension and deception of stillness of glaciers. To human-time they seem so motionless - until they’re not. The calving events are dramatic and powerful and I feel privileged to have been a witness. The painting considers how rupture is rarely spontaneous; it is the result of slow, incremental change unfolding beneath a calm surface.
