‘Punalu’u’ is an area on Oahu, Hawai’i where the old volcanic ridge meets the sea. This piece was painted after a stay here and was inspired by the small beach by a creek running down off the mountains, and a cluster of trees holding on for dear life as the elements eroded their little parcel of land. The palm trees appear almost fluid themselves, and the earth—over time—seems indistinct from the sea. There’s a sense of being able to glimpse the speed of time as Mother Earth herself experiences it.
