Artist Statement
A.K.A Japanese Maple is a new work inspired by my studies of the Art Nouveau period and my property in the Yarra Ranges and was painted at the same time as Mystery Magnolia. Acer Palmatum is the botanical name for a Japanese maple, and is the better choice for the top of the retro painting as it gives off botanical/latin vibes like an old botanical illustration or horticultural plate.
This is not just any Japanese maple – it’s an actual tree on my property, estimated to be around a hundred years old. Its broad base splits into a few great limbs, creating a natural seat where you can tuck yourself inside. It has stood in that same place for a century, listening to the stream, weathering the seasons, and radiating a kind of quiet, ancient wisdom. I asked it to look after the place while I was away, and I’m seriously not the “woo-woo” type, but I swear it lovingly mocked my anxiety.
